National Day of Civic Hacking 2014 Report

The National Day of Civic Hacking was celebrated on May 31 - Jun 1st in more than 125 locations across the US, including a hackathon at the White House.

OSEHRA participated in the event that took place at the State University of New York at Albany.

This event was co-organized by

During the event, the participants analyzed the SPARC dataset containing the de-identified records of hospitals releases in New York state for 2012.

The full data set contains 2.5 million records, and provides insight on the distribution of health care costs related to hospital inpatient charges.

Participants used the IPython Notebook and the Python pandas library to perform data analysis in the SPARC collection.

IPython notebooks are available here:

Distributed under the Apache License 2.0.

One of the interesting points of analysis was the high use of Emergency room access, and its distribution across age groups in the dataset.

It was a great experience to have in the same group, hackers from academia, government and industry, working side by side of projects of public interest.

This was a momentous occasion to bring together people with technical skills to tackle problems of public interest.
