Problem List API - Calling Conventions

Early in the development process we decided we need a consistent calling convention for our API tags. We also followed a set of guiding principles: no assumed variables (except for DUZ, DT, U), validate the input parameters, find a way to report business logic errors to the UI layer.

So we explored the following options:

  • The RPC broker way: TAG(RESULT,PARAM1,PARAM2,…)

This is pretty nice. The return value is always at the beginning of the parameters list so it is easy to identify it. It is a bit awkward to check if the call succeeded:

Open Health Data

This short blog could serve as a starting point for discussions and activity related to Open Data & VistA by the OSEHRA working group. I had previously published this on Open Health News (OHN)  - check out www.openhealthnews.com

Open Data can be defined as 'selected data' that should be made freely available to everyone to use and republish as they wish, without restrictions from copyright, patents or other excessive control mechanisms.

CIO VA, Roger Baker, VistA Open Source Initiative Memo

OSEHRA's picture

Colleagues,

In memo attached, dated June 6, 2012, addressed to all Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Under Secretaries, Assistant Secretaries and other Key Officials, Roger Baker, Assistant Secretary for Information and Technology, sets a deadline of October 1, 2012 to implement the open source model for VistA.

In this correspondence, Mr. Baker notes that the "VistA Open Source Initiative" is an effort to ensure that the modernization of the VA electronic health record is open to the best minds in government, industry and academia.

Lessons Learned from Mizar, the Flying Pinto

Here is a tragic but humorous video of the story of Mizar, the Flying Pinto.  A couple of engineers tried to integrate a Ford Pinto with the rear end of a Cessna, creating a "best of breed" approach to a car that could fly.  This is a 1973 promotional video of the idea, a bit overblown (I can't imagine flying 200 mph in a Pinto), and it's hard to imagine the Pinto as "Best of Breed,  but I suspect the results would have been the same with trying to integrate a Rolls Royce with a Lear Jet.  The contraption crashed a
