Does there exist a way to...

Was looking through some blog posts. Some are flagged ,above the username, as "new" in red.

What I couldn't tell is when "new" expires , that is, how can I mark a page for myself as "read" to minimize duplicate work? Is it upon re-login to the site, having viewed a particular page? Is there a way to "mark as read" a thread, even internally?
