Situational Awareness

The mission of the OSEHR Situational Awareness Group is to provide community members with multi-sector situational awareness and strategic intelligence.

The purpose of this capability is to enable community members to more effectively capture opportunities to translate open source innovations to medical reality.  The business intelligence platform will be powered by the user generated contributions of OSEHRA's network of members and the “Brain” graphic  visualization system.

Click Here to Access: "OSEHRA Brain"

The searchable, “OSEHRA Brain” has over 80,000 data points related to the translation of medical technology from “Lab to Market.”. The database covers over 70 categories of Pioneering Research, 75 relevant market niches in the Colonizing Small Business sector, and comprehensive analysis of Mass Market Consolidators: & Supporting Intermediaries in the major market verticals related to healthcare.

The data points or “thoughts” are further ‘Tagged” and “Categorized” to display acquisitions and acquirers, funding opportunities and sources, venture capital deal flow (Series A through F), Disruptive Platform technologies, Experienced, Winning Leadership Teams at bringing new product to market, Strategic Corporate Partner candidates, De-Risked recipients of non-dilutive government funding, and companies who are recipients of outsized private equity investments.

Each data point is connected within its own ecosystem of market vertical, company size, geography, and more. The data points are all dynamic, connected to the internet, and reveal additional information if you click them to drill down to the lower levels of detail, i.e., key people, location, contact information, etc. The OSEHRA Brain will provide community members with unparalleled visibility of research impacting their areas of interest, business bringing product ready innovations to market, and who funds them.

Recommending "Designing Open Projects: Lessons From Internet Pioneers Designing Open Projects: Lessons From Internet Pioneers"

Dave Wiztel just published an excellent report about openness and the Internet:  Designing Open Projects: Lessons From Internet Pioneers.  It  offers practical design advice to public managers and political leaders who are facing complex, dynamic public challenges involving multiple stakeholders on issues or problems where there is no cl

VIdeos from Underground Railroad Banquet at George Mason University

Here are some videos from the Underground Railroad Banquet held at George Mason University June 5, 2012.

Note Washington VA Chief of Staff Ross Fletcher's talk demonstrating iPad access to VistA, and an associated App Store for VA apps.  Ross is a poster boy for clinician/programmer collaboration in VistA, one of the key attributes of what made it so successful.

Some thoughts about genomics and future architectures.

Thanks, Gerry, for compiling these links to genomics resources for consideration in future OSEHRA architectural thinking.  I think that this is an extremely important area for a number of reasons:

Obviously, it is a very hot area.  During my visit to Cambridge last week, I couldn't help but notice the number of bulidings with "Gen" names attached.  And, of course, Torrey Pines in San Diego is the same way.

Some events in Boston next week

I'll be in Cambridge next week to attend the O'Reilly Health Foo Camp.   This is a very interesting group of folks collected by O'Reilly Publishers who have a very strong interest in Open Source.  It is also being supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Pioneer Fund.  This is an Open Space "unconference" model, unimaginably far removed from the many "death by Powerpoint" presentations I've sat through in Washington, so it should be a fun, creative time.  I plan to propose a session on Open Vis

Situational Awareness Working Group will be Archived Tomorrow

As you know, the OSEHRA Admin Team has been working to strealine working groups so that we can provide the most supportive tools to assist your efforts. To that end, the Situational Awareness group will be archived tomorrow, January 10th.

However, we strongly encourage you to participate in other active groups that have a similar structure and goal as this one. We recommend Corporate Support or another group that will fit your individual needs and interests.

Chuck Hagel, one of the Fathers of VistA, nominated to be Secretary of Defense

As deputy administrator of the VA in 1982, Chuck Hagel was instrumental in making VistA a success... Here is my blog entry about it

In recognition of his efforts, I gave him the first Unlimited Free Passage on the Underground Railroad Certificates:

This is a very prestigious award, that has no expiration date.  So, if he ever needs some advice from a proven team, we're available :)

Congressman Issa discusses draft open source language

I draw your attention to an article in yesterday's FierceGovernmentIT by David Parera entitled "Issa open source language comes under criticism", .

Interesting reading for those engaged in the government procurement of open source software ...

Situational Awareness Working Group will be archived.

Hello Situational Awareness Working Group,

The OSEHRA Admin team has begun implementing the Working Group Restructuring plan that was published on this website on September 5th, 2012. In accordance with that plan, this group will be archived so that previous discussions and postings will still be available to view but members will be unable to comment or edit any further.

If you have any questions or concerns about this process, please email Administration at

great presentation by Christophe Lambert at OSEHRA Summit

Here video of Christophe Lambert's excellent presentation:  Dealing with Big Genomic Data: Towards Predictive & Preventative Medicine which is of interest to both the genomics folks, but also the architecture folks as well.  It documents the accelerating changes happening in the life sciences, as well as our decelerating abilitty to deal with them.

An open invitation to join the Fileman/Lab Agile Project (FLAP):

VA has recently funded a small project to be completed by T3 Tiger Tech, with sub-contracting provided by the VISTA Expertise Network. This project will use already-completed open-source improvements, and some new code, to create and distribute a new version of the VISTA File Manager (Fileman) package. This in turn will enable future development of VISTA Lab and Fileman.

No questions have been added to this group.
No documents have been added to this group.

Rideshares to/from the OSEHRA summit

The OSEHRA Situational Awareness Wiki

The OSEHRA Situational Awareness wiki enables the OSEHRA community to write documents collaboratively, using a simple markup language and a web browser. A single page in a wiki website is referred to as a "wiki page", while the entire collection of pages, which are usually well interconnected by hyperlinks, is "the wiki". A wiki is essentially a database for creating, browsing, and searching through information.
